Rory Ellis Perfectly Damaged Album

Rory Ellis is an Aussie but you’d be forgiven for thinking he had a big chunk of Texas in him. Accoustic guitar and banjo and vocals that range from gravelly to twanging country but every moment has something to grab the ear and bring a smile or a knowing grin to the face – oh yeah, we all been there!

Just listen to the title track – “It took a lot of hard years to get this good – and I wouldn’t change a thing” and singing of his pride in the scars of age, “I’m not hetting old, just perfectly damaged” over the smokiest of Louisiana Bayou Blues. This guy is Lemmy Kilminster with a banjo!

When he ups the tempo on a track like ‘Gravy Train’ he is in a perfect skiffle groove but with better vocals and then there is the obligatory car song, professing his love for a ’65 Pontiac he found in a field – suddenly the car is the owner of him and not the other way round.

Rory Ellis is one of those rare artists who can tell a story without shame and brings you in to the depths of his soul – and he writes a great song too.
